This is based on private correspondence, especially with Priscilla Walker from Amrita. I cannot be entirely sure of it's accuracy.
In 1935 Dhirananda sued Yogananda over money he claimed was due to him for his writings, including the early lessons series. I am told that the court records show that Dhirananda had been responsible for the lessons, but I have not seen these documents myself.
