Point of Information: Richard L Thompson, "Vedic Cosmography and Astronomy",Bhaktivendanta Book Trust (Swami Prabhupada's outfit) presents the histortical facts on this subject, fairly well separated from his presentation of vedic myth and theology. It also has a good set of references. I see that he was a Cornell Math PhD (from my Department), but I do not know him. The answers to a number of questions raised on the discussion board are in this book, certainly those pertaining to geocentric versus solarcentric systems and how the Vedas relate to astronomical computations and cycles. I will return to discuss this topic somewhat later in the semester when I have more time. The book is quite inexpensive.
