Maybe....though I believe that Yogananda didn't just modify 2nd kriya, he replaced it with another kriya type exercise altogether that has the same effect of helping one to cognize chakras and inner sound. It seems he then, with some minor modifications, moved the traditional 2nd kriya to be the 3rd SRF kriya, and the traditional 3rd became the SRF fourth. I assume the particular utilization of the tongue you refer to is that deemed to be necessary during the thokar aspect of higher kriya. Although SRF 2nd kriya does not have thokar, both SRF kriyas 3 and 4 utilize thokar, without khechari. Also, Ketch related in another post that some editions of the AY have a footnote that verifies the concordance between the SRF 3rd kriya and traditional 2nd kriya, though I have not personally seen these editions. Anyway, if this is true, it would seem that Yogananda believed performance of the higher kriyas can be beneficial without kechari.
