"This should make one think. Many Kriya teachers advocate the practice of hundreds (or even thousands) pranayams a day and even increase the effect with Kechari Mudra and such. What becomes of those who really practice them?"

Not all teachers think the same way, the important thing is to follow your Guru instruction. Lahiri Mahashay for example instructed his disciples to perform many hours of pranayama, and many of his disciples were great saints.

"I'm telling you from the beginning to be careful and practice Kriya properly. 600 pranayam and 50 mahamudra."

"If there is a contagious disease or pestilence (plague) one should do 600 Pranayam and 50 Mahamudra. One should increase it gradually; beginning at 100, increase it by 25 each day. Start with 12 Mahamudra and increase daily by 2. Those who regularly practice 200 Pranayam and 20 Mahamudra daily should increase to the full amount right away. One should not eat fish or meat."

Disciple's letter:
"After sitting for twelve and a half hours and finishing Kriya, I received astonishing bliss. You have shown me so many beautiful divine experiences [visions]. You know all of this. [or, You know all.]"
