There cannot be much doubt that Yogananda did very substantially alter the Kriya system which he learned from Sri Yukteswar, especially in regard to the higher Kriya's. Why he did this we cannot be sure of, but presumably he had his reasons.

As to whether or not the system taught by Yogananda is still effective or not, you have practised it for a long time, and you are probably in a much better position than Satyeswarananda to decide whether or not it works.

I once wrote to an acharya in the lineage of Lahiri Mahasaya's great disciple Panchanon Bhattacharya about whether it would be advisable to learn the original Kriya Yoga of Lahiri Mahasaya. This is part of his reply.

"...I feel it is better to surrender to the spirit and greatness of Paramhansa Yogananda because of your prolonged practice with the above techniques. To shift to Lahiri Mahasaya's original kriya now anew may create complications with the new techniques starting from the beginning. To get higher kriyas it may take much time, because of certain bindings and spiritual injunctions."

I believe that you will find that Satyeswarananda's dismissal of the techniques taught by Yogananda is not representative of the views of most kriyabans who genuinely learned in the original style taught by Lahiri Mahasaya.

Satyeswarananda's writing sometimes gives the impression that he is very resentful of what he sees as the mistreatment of his guru Swami Satyananda by Yogananda and YSS. Some people who have met Satyeswarananda, or spoken to him by telephone describe him as being extremely rude and agressive.

Satyeswarananda, being a disciple of Satyananda probably does know kriya in the style it was taught by Sri Yukteswar, whether or not he ever received the direct instruction from Babaji which he claims is another matter.
