The cultural dependency of such experiences does not apply only to the religious type. The many reported sightings of UFO's are one example. UFO phenomenon (or at least the interpretation of such phenomenon as evidence of extraterrestrial visitations) only seems to have become common in the latter part of the 20th century. In other words, only since the concept of extraterrestrial life and space travel became widely known and accepted. Prior to that similar experiences were often reported in terms of Fairies and other non-human semi-magical lifeforms.

Stories of alien abductions often share similar features. They often seem to occur on waking from sleep, or on long tedious journeys. They often involve physical paralysis, a sensation of something sitting on the chest making breathing difficult, sometimes there are tales of sexual experimentation carried out by the abductors. All these things have clear parallels in the older stories of incubus and succubus.

This seems to imply that whatever the real source of such experiences, the mind is capable of interpreting them in terms familiar to its own culture and understanding.
