Yama/Niyama have their place no doubt. Yoga practice is much easier with a satvic mind, but that can also be a trap.

When I began to meditate, I was asked to keep a diary. Every night, for years, I would think through the day and write down all the transgressions in the headings of Ahimsa, Truthfullness, Chastity and Selfless service. These would be recorded in thought word and deed. Mind became very clear and it was easy to go back through the day and see what happened.

The real problem became not what, but WHY. One can see only so deeply and certain other practices are usually required to go deeper - into the cause of it.
