"'Lahiri, do you call me for a trifle?' The master's gaze was stern. 'Truth is for earnest seekers, not for those of idle curiosity. It is easy to believe when one sees; there is nothing then to deny. Supersensual truth is deserved and discovered by those who overcome their natural materialistic skepticism.' He added gravely, 'Let me go!'"
From "Autobiography of a Yogi" when Lahiri Mahasaya had called upon Babaji to appear as a demonstration for some friends.

If such phenominal powers exist at all they are extremely rare, and I doubt that anyone who posesses them would be prepared to demonstrate them for any research project. Sceptics may well believe that this is because they are unable to demonstrate such powers, and in most cases they would probably be right.

I know only one person who I would trust in these matters who has told that he witnessed his guru demonstrate the breathless state, for a few close disciples only. That guru teaches quietly in India, and seeks no publicity.

Even in the unlikely event that someone could demonstrate such powers it would still not be certain that they were due to the practice of any yoga techniques, rather than natural abilities that a few rare people may posess.

The only real use for a research department would be to study the effects of the techniques for the ordinary person, where the results are probably far less dramatic. Perhaps it could be shown that pulse or breath rates are slower in meditation among those who have practised Kriya for ten years than among those who have practised Kriya for one year. Even if this is so, however, it would have little meaning unless we could compare it to a control group of some sort. I cannot see how this could be done.
