It is only a few dollars a month and it keeps the board free of adverts. Boards2go had introduced popup adverts on their free boards which were causing technical problems for some people.

The days of the free internet may be close to an end. There has been a lot of publicity about advertising revenues falling off since the bursting of the internet bubble. Message boards are not liked by advertisers as the users have got used to simply ignoring adverts. Bords2go had said that despite their boards receiving over 3Million hits per day, banner advertising produced just $80 per month in revenue.

InsideTheWeb, a major provider of message boards closed down over a year ago now. Yahoo have merged their popular Yahoo Clubs into something called Yahoo Groups, which has lots of large adverts making the messages slow to load, and sometimes hard to read. Several other message board providers have closed down recently.

It seems advertising only pays for message boards when it can be targeted, e.g. financial advertising on a message board about investments.
