Howdy!
Ok here it goes... I live in East TN in the Smoky Mtn area. I currently have 5 Guinea fowl which I have successfully transported by egg, incubated & hatched, etc. when we moved down from NJ about 4 years ago and they're doing well. I am now interested in raising Peafowl. 1st question is, can/will they coexist with the Guinea's. I currently keep my Guinea's penned and let them free range when weather permits. We have 8 acres and are totally surrounded by plenty of woods with a few neighbors. 2nd question- how are they once they around other animals such as dogs, cats, and children? Can they be agressive? Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
JC

Hi, i live in the uk and have only had my two peas for 19 months so i am absolutely no expert - there are people here who are and will be along to help you. In the meantime, I have heard that GF and peafowl mix okay but i think you have to be careful about cross infection from other types of fowl to the peas - some people don't keep chickens and peas penned together for this reason - others, with a good worming regieme, do. My two cats and my two peacocks have a healthy respect for one another - but neither are concerned to be near the other. I think dogs can be unsafe around peafowl - with the dog as the aggressor - but i know people who have both, i guess it maybe largely on how you bring them up together. I think generally they are not aggressive birds - i would always worry about my peas when around children rather than the other way around. There are of course exceptions, and the only time i have heard of peas being aggressive to people is if they have been brought up from a very young age and have bonded to the person - they can then become a bit aggressive when mature during the breeding season - I have read of this but i think this is the exception rather than the rule. I think there are experts who would say that all peas are different when it comes to temperament - but i wounder if they would agree that generally they are not aggressive to to other animals and people? - that is my experience.
Finally, i brought two boys and do regret that - i think they need some female company to keep them happy and from wandering off looking for hens in the spring. I think people generally get a trio of one male to two or more females. There is then the question of what preditors you have around you if your peas are to be freerange - here in the uk we only have foxes and i chose to take that risk and let mine be free - but you would know more about the risk in your area. People with much more knowledge will be along to help you or you could put the same question to the forum linked to the united peafowl association: peafowl.org and follow the link to the forum. GOOD LUCK, let us know what you decide
