Subject: It is black and white?

Wow. There sure are some strong feelings here. What I suspect is going on is that people are seeing things in terms of black and white. This comes from people believing that their Bible is totally without error (which is a claim the Bible itself never makes). Once you have a book that is "error free", then everything must be made to work together. However, it doesn't. Here's a few examples of Paul not meshing with the rest of the Bible.

Paul's Teachings:

But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat. - 1 Corinthians 5:11

Scriptural Contradiction:

And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. - Matthew 9:11, 12

Paul's Teachings:

Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband. - 1 Corinthians 7: 1,2

Scriptural Contradiction:

And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. - Genesis 2:18

Paul's Teachings:

Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? - 1 Corinthians 11:14

Scriptural Contradiction:

That he (Samson) told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a rasor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother's womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man. - Judges 16:17

Paul's Teachings:

As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one. For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,) But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him. Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled. But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse. - 1 Corinthians 8: 4-8

Scriptural Contradiction:

I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: - Revelations 2:2

But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication. - Revelations 2:14

Another good link is this one: http://www.depts.drew.edu/jhc/eisenman.html

It refers to Paul's heritage and potential connections with the Roman government.

Now, there's really no doubt that Paul was faulty. Does that make him evil? Maybe it just makes him a sinner. Maybe he's neither black nor white (one extreme or the other) but grey.

In Messiah,
Matthew
