A BROKEN HEALER

_________________________

1 Peter 2:22-25 (NRSV)

"He committed no sin,
and no deceit was found in his mouth."

When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.

He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.

- Isaiah 53:5 (NIV)

MY grandmother gave me an aloe vera plant. It was a beautiful plant that was tall, strong, and a vibrant green. "The aloe has excellent healing properties," she told me. "Break off a piece from the plant, and rub the gel from its center on cuts and burns to help them heal."

I frequently broke pieces off the aloe, sliding the cool, wet gel from pieces of the plant over my cuts or burns. It was soothing, and the wounds healed soon after the treatment. Yet over time I began to notice that my healing came at a great cost to the aloe. Many of the shoots had been broken off, making it look smaller and lopsided.

Looking at the broken aloe, I was drawn to reflect on how Christ suffered for our spiritual healing. He allowed his body to be broken to atone for my sins. He gave himself for me.

Prayer: O God, thank you for the immense sacrifice of your son,
Jesus. Remind us that in following you, we too may face suffering. Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Christ was broken so that we can be whole.

PRAYER FOCUS: Those facing suffering
