THE first year I taught school, I worried about what other people thought. Did other teachers think I was doing a good job? Did they like me? Would I be rehired? I taught with the classroom door open, trying to impress the principal.

My anxiety grew until I finally gave it all to God. "How can I stop being preoccupied with what people think of me?" I asked. As if in answer, I saw a picture in my mind. I could see myself at a state fair, pumping up a huge balloon of a grinning person. The balloon bobbed and smiled over my head. It looked a lot like me.

That image has helped me ever since. The balloon represents the impression I try to create for the world. I can work really hard at pumping it up, but it's not the real me. That's why the praise of other people can never be enough, because it doesn't affect the real person underneath the image. Only God can satisfy our need for approval, love, and security. God cares about us, not the image we try to project.
The next day I taught with the classroom door closed, wanting to trust God.


Prayer: Dear God, fill us with the knowledge of how much you love and
care for each one of us. Amen.
