HOLY SPIRIT, PLEAD FOR US!

Romans 8:18-27 (NRSV)


I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

MY teenage daughter and I exchanged bitter words. Accusations flew. Voices reached a crescendo. Doors slammed.

Afterward I lay on my bed, tears streaming down my face. I felt angry, hurt, frustrated, and discouraged. I had failed as a parent, and I felt bitterly abused and taken for granted. To be brutally honest, I stepped dangerously close to cursing the one who needed my love the most! Instead, I tried in desperation to pray. It was no use. Words of blessing just would not come. The hurt was too new, the anger too raw. What should I ask for? How should I begin? My mind was numb.

Miraculously, the Spirit interceded, and I heard myself whisper, "I don't even know how or what I ought to pray. Holy Spirit, plead for me with sighs too deep for words!" No sooner had the words crossed my lips than I felt my body and mind relax. My soul rested. I trusted that God would listen to the Holy Spirit interceding for me, not to my sinful nature. I was at peace. I slept. Later, I awoke refreshed and renewed, ready to forgive, to love, to hope, to repent, to be reconciled with my daughter.


Prayer: Heavenly Father, you know our hearts. Thank you for rescuing
us from our sinful nature and giving us the Holy Spirit, the Comforter that Jesus promised would come to us. Amen.


THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
