Isaiah 12:2-6 (NRSV)

Surely God is my salvation;
I will trust, and will not be afraid,
for the LORD GOD is my strength and my might; he has become my salvation.
With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. And you will say in that day:
Give thanks to the LORD,
call on his name;
make known his deeds among the nations;
proclaim that his name is exalted.
Sing praises to the LORD, for he has done gloriously; let this be known in all the earth.
Shout aloud and sing for joy, O royal Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.

ON Christmas morning I watched some of my children and grandchildren opening their gifts. My heart was heavy as I thought of their broken marriages, non-traditional relationships, and financial problems brought about by unwise decisions.

I'd traveled through Advent with my church family. Each week, we had progressively lighted the candles of hope, peace, joy, and love in our Advent wreath. We had sung songs of praise to God for coming to us in Jesus. We had acknowledged that Christmas is all about relationships. But this beloved family of mine seemed far removed from this truth of Christmas.

That evening I read a meditation in The Upper Room magazine about a woman whose parents were alcoholic. She wrote of her pain and how God had come to comfort her one Christmas day. I felt that God was saying to me, "You are my beloved child. You are precious to me and so are your loved ones. I have promised never to leave you or forsake you, and I never will." Hope, peace, and joy returned and my heart overflowed with love for my God and for my family.

Prayer: Gracious Father, we thank you for our families and friends.
Bind us together in love for one another through Jesus Christ. Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Because of God's perfect love, we can love and accept our imperfect families.
