THE GREATEST GIFT

Psalm 116:12-19 (NRSV)

What shall I return to the LORD
for all his bounty to me?
I will lift up the cup of salvation
and call on the name of the LORD,
I will pay my vows to the LORD
in the presence of all his people.
Precious in the sight of the LORD
is the death of his faithful ones.
O LORD, I am your servant;
I am your servant, the child of your
serving girl. You have loosed my bonds.
I will offer to you a thanksgiving
sacrifice and call on the name of the LORD.
I will pay my vows to the LORD
in the presence of all his people,
in the courts of the house of the LORD,
in your midst, O Jerusalem.
Praise the LORD!

DURING the Sunday evening service at my church in Louisville, the interim pastor read from Matthew 2:1-12 and talked about the magi coming to worship the newborn King of the Jews. He wanted us to think about what Christmas is really all about - giving. The magi gave from their hearts and from their treasures to the Christ child.

In Jesus Christ, God gave us a gift that cannot be measured. What can we give to our Lord in return? The gifts of worship, devotion, and service. But we can also remind ourselves and others of the reason for Christmas by sharing the wonderful story of how God became a human in Jesus Christ. By sharing this story, we can offer comfort and hope to others.

Instead of being caught up in the rush of buying things, we can stop to remind ourselves and others that Christmas is when God gave us the greatest gift: Jesus. In return, devoting ourselves to serving God is the best way we can give thanks for God's great gift of love.

Prayer: Lord, help us to remember that you gave the whole world the
greatest gift anyone could ever give. Help us to serve you in ways that honor your gift. In Jesus' name. Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Sharing the love of Christ is the greatest gift we can give.

-- Roger E. Brannon (Kentucky, U.S.A.)

PRAYER FOCUS: Those who share the gospel story with others
