The Soul of Britannia, a Role Playing Scenario, on the Oceania Shard.
By Spad, of the Nights Watch

The Object: The Soul of Britannia, resembling a power crystal, this artifact was created in a time before memory. Like the souls of men, it can be turned to good or evil by the one who posses it. It has been under the constant watchful guard of a secret band of Druid Monks, The Order of Virtues. It is hidden somewhere in the lands of Britannia. The location is known by the Order and no others.

The Players:

The Order of Virtue: Dalbin, Elder of the Order, referred to but may not be seen.
Elrond, namesake to the great leader of the Elven people, he is an acolyte in the Order. He will be the focus of frame 1 of the scenario. The Order is responsible ensuring the power of the Shrines Of Virtue remains intact. They gather each full moon at the Shrine of Sacrifice.

Forces of Light: Moraith of the Nights Watch, together with his allies he will seek to assure that the Soul does not fall into the hands of the forces of darkness.

Forces of Darkness: Seth of the Kindred, together with his allies he will stop at nothing to find the Soul and deliver it to the Brotherhood of Chaos.

Brotherhood of Chaos: Lead by Zargresh, High Lord of Darkness, the Brotherhood has just gained knowledge of the Soul from a spy recently placed in the Order of Virtues. He will stop at nothing to posses the Soul, plunging Britannia into darkness and turning its citizens into vassals of the Lords of Darkness.

Frame 1: Elrond Imprisoned

Zargresh, High Lord of Darkness, leader of the Brotherhood of Chaos has ordered Seth
and his allies to bring him Elrond. A traitor in the Order of Virtues has
informed him that Dalbin has placed the location of the soul deep in his mind.
Elrond himself does not know that he has the knowledge. It can only be accessed by
words that Dalbin knows. The Brotherhood does not need those words as they will simply empty all the contents of Elrond’s mind leaving him an empty shell taking the knowledge they need and discarding all that is Elrond, a fate worse than death.

Zargresh has ordered that the entire Order is to be destroyed and the head of Dalbin delivered to him. He wants to be sure that Dalbin is dead. This way only they will know the location of the soul, as no others in Britannia know the methods of the mind emptying.

It is the night of the full moon. The Order of Virtues is meeting at the Shrine of Sacrifice. Although their meeting time and place is supposed to be a closely guarded secret, the traitor has led the Kindred to that very spot and they are waiting in hiding for the time to strike. At precisely midnight, while the Order is in full meditation, the Kindred and others of the forces of Darkness attack. It is a ferocious and brutal assault. Elrond is easily captured, a Blue gate opens and he is thrown through. Dalbin, gravely wounded sees this and dons a cloak of invisibility. He knows that if he dies, his knowledge dies with him and no one in Britannia will be able to get the location of the Soul from Elrond.

Looking about him, Dalbin sees all in his Order dead or dying, The Kindred is methodically searching each body, looking for him. Occasionally one of the attackers will bend over a still living victim and gently “kiss” the victims neck. The one touched will stiffen and then go still as if the very life was drawn from him. Seth is heard screaming, “ We must find Dalbin, damn the Gods, where is he?” In time it is realized that Dalbin is no where to be found. The rosy light of dawn begins to show in the east. The Kindred and its army must leave and return to the shadows of Serpents Hold.

“Zargresh will not be pleased,” thinks Seth, “but we have Elrond and as long as we do what matter is it if Dalbin lives.”

Standing at the Shrine, Dalbin surveys the remains of the Order. With all the members dead, their life forces can no longer join to support the power of the shrines. He sees a flicker in the aura of the shrine and thinks, “ I did not expect this to happen so soon!” “Even now the link of the Shrines is weakening. In time the shrines will no longer be unified. With the Order gone, only the Soul of Britannia can repair the damage and perhaps permanently ensure that the link of the Shrines remains intact. “

Dalbin, binds his wounds as best he can and sets off to find the only one in the land that may be able to find and rescue Elrond. This One is the leader of the Black Brothers. Although they wear the color of Darkness, they are the light of Britannia. He must find Moraith. He walks away knowing that this will be his last journey, he must take care for he is sure that the Kindred will be searching for him.

Moraith is in his study, within Castle Black, home of the Nights Watch. It has been a long day. For many weeks the Nights Watch has been conducting operations against the new tide of evil in the land. He thinks, “First the Orc and Savage War, now Jukas invade Trinsic and Yew. Rumors of Blackthorn’s return! It was hard enough just keeping the brigands in check and the Wildings and Others in their Dungeons.” Now this new foul tide is loose on the land. Truly I wonder at times if the Forces of Darkness have the upper hand.” “ No matter, though, as long as the Nights Watch and it’s allies draw breath, we will continue the Quest to protect the Realm.”

He could not know that a figure was approaching his door that would set him on a new course that would change his life, and those he leads, forever!

A gnarled hand reaches out and strikes an oaken door. The sound echoes through Castle Black and finally reaches Moraith in his study. Making his way down stairs he wonders who would be arriving at this late hour. Pulling the door open, he half expected his brother Karrash to be standing there, having forgotten his keys once again, but there stood an ancient figure. “ Gods Eyes! It’s Dalbin!” he gasps. “Come in old friend, what brings you so far from your land?”
Before Danaan’s call, before the Nights Watch, Moraith had studied with the Order; he is one of the few in Britannia that knew of their existence, a secret he has kept even from his closest advisors. Dalbin says nothing but falls into the arms of his old friend. “Dalbin! Moraith whispers, “Dalbin, what has happened to you?” Dalbin rouses himself a bit to answer, “Thank the Gods I have found ye! “ “All is in peril, the Order is no more!” With that Dalbin lapses into unconsciousness.

Moraith carries Dalbin to a cot and gently places him upon it. It is clear to him that his life’s energies are close to ending. He summons Olorin. “ Olorin do what you can for him, he has said all is in peril. I must know what he meant.” Olorin looks at the broken body before him. “I’ll need others, Moraith. Even my great powers may not hold his soul to this body.” “Get whatever help you require”, Moraith commands. “Do it quickly, I fear that the world rests upon what he knows.”

Olorin summons Lunaris and Faigan, together the three Mages heal Dalbin’s body, but not his soul. “Moraith”, Olorin says, “ His body is healed but his soul is dying, that I can not stop. He is different, this one, I have not seen his like. He is like us and yet he is not. I must know more if I am to cure him completely.”

“ I can tell you no more my friend, lest I break a vow taken before your time. I must speak with him” Moraith responds. “ Do what you can. I must know what has happened! Awake him now!”

Olorin complies and brings Dalbin to wakefulness. “ Leave us Olorin, I will speak with him alone” Moriath Commands.

“Old friend what has happened? What happened to the Order? What peril do we face?” Moraith asks.

“My old friend, you know our Order for you studied with us. What you did not know is that we also held a greater secret. That secret is the location of the Soul of Britannia! The Soul was entrusted to us in a time before time. Before the shattering of the shards, before the facets! Long these ages it has been kept safe. This is no longer the case. A new Evil has changed everything. Long we had known of a darker force, a Brotherhood of Chaos. A traitor in our Order betrayed our secret. The Brotherhood sent others upon us to find the knowledge of the Soul. They attacked us at the Shrine of Sacrifice and only two survived. The attackers left none other alive. Those they did not kill outright, they drank from their bodies, killing them more slowly. (Vampires! Moraith thinks, the mark of the Kindred!) My time in the world grows short. You must find and rescue Elrond. In his mind is the location of the Soul. I carry the words that will release that knowledge. Only I may speak them. You must find him and bring him to me.” Dalbin says further, “I know that Elrond lives because I can sense his thoughts. He is being held captive in a fort that lies upon a bridge. This bridge is on an island eastward from the enemies home. You cannot get there by land. You must travel over water. Magic travel is not an option. As their Mages will know that you are coming and lie in wait for you.” With that Dalbin, his energies exhausted, falls back upon the bed, unconscious.

“Olorin rouse him again!” I need to know more!” Moraith commands.

Olorin replies, “He has no more to give, M’Lord and if you want him alive on the ‘morrow, I suggest you leave him to me! You best do what you need to do because this man is not long of this world. Even now his soul is slipping.”

Moraith turns and storms from the room. He says with out turning, “ You best keep him alive, the fate of the realm rests upon what he knows! Send ravens to the Nights Watch and our Allies! We must plan our next moves!”

Mission objectives: The Forces of Light must free Elrond and bring him to Dalbin so that the location of the Soul can be known. To do that they must go to Elrond’s location, defeat the defenders, open a gate and lead him through. The Forces of Darkness must prevent that from happening. Whichever side has possession of Elrond at the end of the 5pm run of the frame, will be deemed the winner.
