I sat and gazed out over my ocean Vista. A refreshing breeze was blowing in from the northeast after the hot and humid conditions earlier in the day. The sea birds called their mournful cry out over the waves. If anyone were sitting with me in the comfort of my secluded hideaway, they would have commented on what a serene and peaceful night it was.

However, I was troubled. Our High Priestess had proclaimed war, Jarek Mace had been accosted and taunted by our new foe, and the Avatar's Guard had received the call to arms.

This evil that was threatening our chosen sanctuary was a mystery to me. How could we fight an unknown enemy? Our training had only recently begun and, while we were all stout of heart and brave souls, our task ahead was daunting. We were yet to complete our reconnaissance of our chosen protectorate. Jarek had some detailed knowledge of Serpents Hold, but even he had been ambushed.

Did this show fear on our enemies part that maybe there was some weakness that Jarek unknowingly held and the Evil One was trying to distract him with these strange tactics? If so, why not just be done with him when he had him?

And too, I worry about my part in the Avatar’s Guard. I have not quite mastered the powers of the wizard, but I must defend my brothers as best I can, being the sole mage amongst them. Will I be equal to the test; will I be there when the time is upon us? So many things distract my mind these days and call me away - I will be distraught if I fail my brothers at this most critical time.

I could see a brief flash of light in The Danaan Rangers tower across the peninsula, and I knew that our High Priestess had been summoned to Dana again. Obviously preparations were being made, but I felt trapped, I had to do something. I sat listening to the gentle waves rippling against the shoreline. Even the Gargoyles and Ogres that normally plague my surrounds seem to have vanished for the evening. Maybe they knew something of this new enemy, if only I knew their speech, maybe they could tell me something - WAIT? THAT'S IT!!!

I had a plan, but it would take some preparation - I must prepare myself for what I had to do, as it was against my normal code of honour to carry out such acts. But I must seek any aide I can for the Guard, to help us through our trial. I must find out what I can and report back to Argile, and our High Priestess. I just hope I would be in time.

Quickly I stowed my uniform, settled on my upstairs verandah when I could feel the essence of all life around me that I would need to draw upon, and called my powers of camouflage to hide me from wandering eyes. I said a small prayer to Dana to grant me the strength to perform my task, and descended into a deep state of meditation. The morning would reveal soon enough if my plan would succeed. For now, I must become one with the land and prepare for the road ahead ..............
