Tribute to Talur
By Lance, Danaan Avatar and Skambha, Ranger of the Stag

It seems amazing in retrospect, the journey of commitment and loyalty that Talur has taken from being a newly-christened warrior to become the High Priestess of Dana for the Rangers. Through sheer persistence, bravery and selflessness, she has forged her own skills and also those of her Rangers into a force to be reckoned with – woe betide anyone who would stand in Dana’s way. However, the sword and bow are only used when no other option presents itself under the teachings of the Ranger, and it is these core teachings that Talur has promoted, applied and taught.

I remember it from many months ago – I was wandering aimlessly around Moonglow in a mindless, dreamy daze when I came across Talur, dressed simply in a robe and equipped with the bare essentials of combat. Heeding TDR’s beliefs I asked if she needed assistance. Through conversation, I learned that this warrior wished to be a grand and powerful warlock of which there are few, and also sought to help others rather than herself. Hearing this, she was soon sponsored into the guild by myself and my dear friend Fazz, then Elder of the Wolf.

Lance, who is now the Danaan Avatar, also met Talur with a small twist of irony. Talur was his apprentice in a Compassion Quest, whereupon Lance taught Talur all the things she would need to know about being a Ranger. Survival in the forests and dungeons is an art in itself, and Lance passed this knowledge down extremely well. Upon completion in the quest, Talur was removed from her initiate status and chose to be a Ranger of the Bear, where raw strength is their sayer.

When the times grew troubled for the Rangers, Talur remained strong and firm – she heeded the orders of those above her on the numerous hunts – that often grew close to disaster – and brought order where the was chaos. In leading several squads of Rangers herself, she demonstrated immense skill as a strategist and extreme competence as a leader, completing objectives often without a single casualty being taken. Emphasising the essential cross-healing and other tactics that taught new Rangers to care for others and not themselves, she helped hasten the training of initiates and the like in the ways of the Ranger whilst becoming one of the most powerful mages in the land.

During the Rebirth of Dana in Ranger lore, many members of the guild suddenly grew weary of the guild’s direction (I, unfortunately, was a casualty of this) and left, fracturing the Rangers into several splinters: some were labelled dissenters – they were those that had caused the guild to fall upon harder times through lack of commitment, greed and self-worth. Others were loyalists, those that remained true and respectful of Dana’s ways. Several members started and joined The Night’s Watch – a friendly, caring guild that remains arm-in-arm with the Danaan Rangers to this day and abides by the same rules of the Rangers.

Amidst the chaos of the ensuing weeks, like a phoenix being reborn in the fire, Talur rose to grasp the reins of the Rangers and reformed the guild, stoking the smouldering embers of loyalty, respect of the Ways and the teachings of the Guild. She brought upon the turmoil a sense of peace in its place and ensured that the rules and laws would not go unnoticed. She single-handedly took to the woods, mines and oceans to provide wood, ore and food for the members, working tirelessly for the good of the Rangers.

Talur has rebuilt the Rangers into the Guild it once was – the Guild it was meant to be. From its mentality of helping others and adherence to the side of good, the Danaan Rangers are once again the embodiment of the virtues. This mammoth task was underdone with tenderness yet courage, involving great personal sacrifice and effort. Without Talur, the guild would not be as it is today – we give her our heartfelt commendation and by order of the Danaan Avatar, we award her the Achievement Medal as a token of our vast appreciation.
