Subject: 305 minor build up

I own a 87 firebird with a 305 in it. Since 350's are getting scarce and dont have the funds to buy a new aftermarket block, I was wondering if anyone new how and what parts I would need to build up about a 300/325 hp 305 without shelling out a couple grand. I need help on this.thanks

here are a few things that may help. 1) heads. vortec heads are cheap. if you run a cam with more than about .460 lift (the figure varies, some say you can run as much as .480 with no work, but it's better to stay safe)

2)cam. if you go with the vortecs, you will need to use a tame cam (as stated) so use a flat tappet cam. like 465/465 214/224 @.050 (something like that). but a roller cam will be a better choice for several reasons. if you opt for the roller cam you will need to either ditch the vortec head idea or get some machine work done to make them accept a huge cam. for about $100-200 you can make them take a big cam. or you could port the hell out of the 305 heads and make them work, but that would cost money too unless you have the tools and skill required to do your own porting.

3)intake. a good intake is allways a good idea. there are a bazillion to choose from, so do that after you have picked th eother parts yuo intend on using.

4)carb, compression and exhaust. carburetors are an item that everyone has a different opinion of. i like a q-jet, others avoud them like a virus. do what suits you in that matter. if you use the vortec heads, you will need a piston with a wicked dome to make up for the extra 10 ccs of chamber. if a stock 305 has 8(ish) to one compression with 52 cc chambers imagine what it would be like with 64 cc chambers. and of course, you will need an exhause system to match.

there is a whole lot more that can be said about this, so if you have any further questions, feel free to e-mail me. badcam_83@hotmail.com
