The new GTO will come to the states, rear wheel drive, LS1 Corvette motor, and either and auto or 6 speed tranny.

It's a very cool car, and one that I would very seriously consider as a replacement for my current Z28, but please don't call the car a GTO!!! Let that great name rest in peace.

[> I definitely like it -- B.J., 13:54:32 03/14/02 Thu

I've been extremely excited about the U.S. version of the HSV Coupe GTO ever since I first heard the rumors. I'm not sure they ought to call it a GTO here in the States, simply because that name has so much history behind it, and it seems blasphemous to re-use it. However, whatever this car ends up being called, I would definitely look into buying one (given the money, of course). After years of GM's V6-powered sedans trying to pass for performance cars, this is a relief.

I currently own a '98 Trans Am WS6 (which I adore) and was devastated when the F-body was eliminated. If there is no Firebird, then I'll certainly take the HSV Coupe. Pontiac's lineup is getting really sad-sack. The Grand Prix GTP -- albeit supercharged but still just a V6 -- is supposed to be their performance flagship? It isn't working. I still advocate for the Firebird's return, but in the meantime, I am certainly excited about this HSV Coupe.

I actually don't have a problem with the fact that the Monaro/GTO is Australian-built and imported. The 4th-gen Firebirds were Canadian-built and imported; I don't see that much of a difference. The reason why I will not buy typical Asian imports is not because of where they are made (which is oftentimes right here in the States), but because they are obsessed with the front-drive, inline-four powertrain that makes me sick. I'm not about to buy a four-cyl and put up with that whine and lack of torque all day long. In a world full of either SUVs or screamy, whiny I4s, I find the new GTO to be a huge breath of fresh air.

Yeah, I agree that they could call it something else. I'm not big on rebadging a car with the name GTO, especially one that's not a pure American-bred bruiser. But that won't stop me from drooling all over that car. The Aussies have proved that they still know what a V8 is and what it's good for. I've seen clues to that end in Lutz's recent projects and I like it. I think this guy could be the one to get GM back on the wide track where it belongs.

Just my $0.02.
