Problem with battery not charging with car running

I have a 99 firebird. It has the 3.8 v6. My problem is that my battery is not charging when the car is running. This all started when my alternator was going about a month ago. Two weekends ago I bought and installed a brand new alternator from Pep Boys. When I started the car I looked at my voltage gauge and it went up to about 12v and sat there. Usually it�s at about 13v to 14v. When I finally drove it the battery died. So I went back to Pep Boys and bought a new battery just to be sure. When I put it in it did the same thing as last time. It just sat at about 12v. I took the alternator back to Pep Boys and they tested it out and said it was good. I overheard the guy behind the counter say it was putting out 14.4v. This has got me stumped. I don�t want to take to a shop just yet because I am low on funds. Any help you guy can give will be greatly appreciated.

i have a 96 volvo 960. i just changed the battery and alternator, but my battery keeps dying on me. i have checked all the connections and their all tight and in the right place. i have no clue what it could be and would like some advice on my situation. thank's
