Mamusz, I know of no place in the scriptures that condemns suicide. However, since this life is a time of probation, as spoken of in the Book of Mormon, is it possible for someone on probation deliberately to shorten his probation without consulting with God?

I regard suicide as a tragedy. I know that in ages past, when confronted with an intolerable situation -- such as capture by enemy soldiers who were guaranteed to torture their captive to death in a horrible way, suicide was considered practical. Likewise, if the torture were intended to get from the victim information that would lead to the deaths of hundreds, or even thousands, of more people, suicide in such an event would not be looked down upon.

However, in our society, suicide seems to be caused by mental dysfunction in which the person who does it has a warped view of the world, and does not understand how things work. It is increasingly obvious that our culture understands very little of the basics of life and actively discourages the development of such an understanding.

My sympathy to the man's family.

The first question is: What can we do right now to help the man's family?

The second question is: What can we do as Christians to eliminate from our culture and society things producing the mental aberrations that lead to suicide?

George
