There are a lot of them, Lois. My first wife was one of them. She had a very long life story about how she was so messed up because of all the abuse that she suffered from just about everybody. Those who foolishly believed her and tried to help her ended up being added to the end of the list of villains after they wised up enough to be of no further use to her. And the longer this went on, the more deeply convinced she was that she was telling the absolute truth, even though the story because so complicated that it began to lack internal consistency even to someone only casually acquainted with it. For instance, one of her counselors told me that she had cried and said that she abused drugs because of the pain of having been thrown out of every place she had ever lived. When the counselor asked her why she had been thrown out, she answered, "For using drugs." I kid you not. The explanations and narrative were this puerile and juvenile.

She had told so many conflicting episodes about this, that, and the other, that if she ever was abused in any way, there is no way that anyone could ever have found out who, what, when or where. I honestly believe that if she had been hypnotized, she would not have been able to tell the truth. She no longer knew what it was. At that point she lost the ability to manipulate and hurt others, because she couldn't convince anyone to cooperate with her schemes any more. Perhaps the Community of Christ officials will eventually get to that point.

But this writhing snake of deception is the real goal of falsely-called revision and reform -- not to get back as closely to the original truth as possible, but to erase it so completely that no one will ever again know what it is. That's why the story keeps changing so much -- it is the artificial reality of the lie.

That's why I have so many problems with people who display outrageous logical inconsistencies. From Ted Kennedy's story about Chappaquiddick, to Herman Cain's story about his 13-year platonic friendship with a woman unknown to his wife, questions arise that have no answers. But the questions themselves, because they follow directly as a consequence of the narrative, provide enough answers that no one wants to know the rest.
