Lois, Stephen King once published a short story about a small time drug trafficker who crashed his plane on a stony desert island. He was unable to trap any seabirds for food, so eventually be began cutting off parts of his extremities, cooking them, and eating them. It became a race to see which of three things would happen: He would be rescued, starve to death, or die of shock from the self-mutilation. Of course, like most traditional horror stories, the main character found himself in this predicament because his lifestyle caused him to fly without filed flight plans over lonely areas, in order to avoid the authorities. Unlike the modern slasher/splatter epics, the traditional horror story is usually a morality tale -- the protagonists invite evil into their lives, believing their own spin that it isn't really all that bad, and they have complete control of everything that is going to happen.
