Lois, since John posted the little scripture passage from the NRSV about Cornelius, it occurs to me that this may be why CofC functionaries quote scripture. If the church is not based upon scripture, quoting scripture is an excellent way to appear pious while directing discussion away from what the church is all about. After all, if the church is not based on scripture, there is no way that much of anything about the church will come up during the discussion of scripture.

The quote you offered about Acts 4:12 pretty much illustrates this. The CofC priesthood always wants to discuss the scriptures with opponents of the church, while in other venues teaching that the scriptures are bogus, and should be mostly ignored in the making of any decisions about doctrine or church practice. It is only after these extra scriptural plans are outlined and adopted that the scriptures are studied to find some excuse in the scriptures to justify the decision to believers.

If the believers would leave the church, they'd be doing the First Presidency a favor, because it would relieve the latter of the need to read the scriptures at all. That would also relieve Stake Presidents from having to spend their days threatening priests with silencing and members with excommunication. With all these folks gone, the leadership could get down to the real business of how to find enough money to run the church now that all the people whose beliefs they despise are no longer around to get in the way.

At every turn, its like our political leaders, who by their actions and rhetoric constantly proclaim that they hate everything that is most dear to the American people, but that they love our tax money.

George
