Basically, this gives them an out. By saying that no church is a real church, or a true one, or a church exemplary of Jesus' message, then the CofC doesn't have to bother trying to be any of those things. Then if they silence people unfairly, they can say, "Well, no church is ever 100% fair." If they excommunicate someone to follow a political agenda, they can say, "Well, no church is for everyone, and since this one is for us, we had to throw him or her out." If the leadership lies about something, they can say, "Well, no church has leaders that are 100% truthful." It goes on and on. The CofC has already passed the point where it justifies promoting homosexuality by tacitly implying that Everybody is actually a latent homosexual, or some kind of other latent sexual offender, so why bother trying?

That's kind of a sideways clone of the pothead's argument: "Everybody does it." But everybody doesn't smoke pot -- only the losers do. And not every church is false, or untrue, or unfaithful, or incompetent, or unrepresentative of Christ's message -- just failed, apostate organizations like the CofC.

I am continually amazed at the insistence that believers must "obey Jesus" at the behest of someone who doesn't even know who Jesus is. The seven sons of Sceva found out how that works out.
