Lois, that "provided by" is a rather elastic phrase that can mean virtually anything. I once sat in on a meeting of a professional licensing board that was having a hearing regarding disciplinary action against a health care professional. The person in question had prescribed some 150 odd large tablets of hydromorphone to a spouse, beginning shortly before the time of the marriage. At that time, prescriptions for this type of narcotic were required to be made out in triplicate. The doctor kept one copy, and the original and copy went to the patient, who took it to the pharmacy, which filled the Rx, and sent the remaining copy in to the State Board of Pharmacy, which in turn contacted investigators for the appropriate licensing board. The defense attorney, I had been told, had never had any experience in this field before -- he specialized in disbarment proceedings against attorneys, so his arguments were rather convoluted and technical. He argued before the board that the information being used to indict the licensee had been provided by the licensee himself. He made this seemingly silly claim on the basis that the doctor had originally committed the prescription to writing and gave the appropriate copies to the patient.

Now given the chain of custody I mentioned above, this is a strange argument. But it resembles the arguments and apologetic made all the time for the Community of Christ.

Please note: since Wallace B. Smith is a medical doctor, I do not mean to insinuate that he ever did anything of this kind. I have never heard anything critical of Dr. Smith's practice of medicine. I only compare the arguments of the attorney on behalf of his client with the arguments of CofC apologists on behalf of that church.
I say this since the leadership of the church seem to have sensitive and tender feelings that get aroused occasionally by statements they don't follow too well.

George
