Subject: CofC lenten scripture: Friday, March 25, 2011

John's post regarding the lawsuit of the CofC hierarchy against the Devon Park RLDS reminded me of a scripture, which I have posted below for the CofC lenten reading, Thursday, March 14, 2011. This passage seems to hit all the topics with the right information for all the disgraceful scandals and controversy within the CofC.

Note: When you read the passage, remember, although just about everybody is a sinner, and has the potential to be a fornicator, and adulterer, a reviler, a robber, a sodomite, a male prostitute, or drunkards, for some reason the CofC wants to ordain sodomites and male prostitutes to the priesthood, but has no sympathy whatsoever for the rest of us sinners. We need to get the word out that if you want to be in the priesthood AND sin, you had better pick a sin that is prevalent among the people upon whom you depend upon for your ordination. If you want to be a robber, but there aren't any robbers among the people who are to ordain you, then perhaps you might give up thoughts of becoming a robber and take up sodomy instead.

5:1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not found even among pagans; for a man is living with his father's wife. 2 And you are arrogant! Should you not rather have mourned, so that he who has done this would have been removed from you.

5:9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral persons -- 10 not at all meaning the immoral of this world, or the greedy and robbers, or idolaters, since you would then need to go out of the world. 11 But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother or sister who is sexualy immoral or greedy, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or robber. Do not even eat with such a one. 12 For what have I to do with judging those outside? Is it not those who are inside that you are to judge? 13 God will judge those outside. "Drive out the wicked person from among you."

6:1When any of you has a griveance against another, do you dare to take it to court before the unrighteous, instead of taking it before the saints? 2 Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases? 3 Do you not know that we are to judge angels -- to say nothing of ordinary matters? 4 If you have ordinary cases, then, do you appoint as judges those who have no standing in the church? 5 I say this to your shame. Can it be that there is no one among you wise enough to decide between one believer and another, 6 but a believer goes to court against a believer -- and before unbelievers at that?

7 In fact, to have lawsuits at all with one another is already a defeat for you. Why not rather be defrauded? 8 But you yourselves wrong and defraud -- and believers at that.

9 Do you know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! Fornicators, idolators, adulterers, male prostitutes, sodomites, 10 thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, robbers -- none of these will inherit the kingdom of God.

First Corinthians 5:1-2, 5:9-6:9

(This is why I think John prefers the NRSV over the Inspired Version. After all, if you are going to be proud of whatever sin that your church has chosen to insitutionalize and proclaim, a modern translation of the Bible can supply a name for it that everyone can understand and appreciate.

George
