Lois, I disagree with the court, which has a shallow understanding of the situation. RLDSism differs from LDSism, or Mormonism, in that the Mormons have a Trinity composed of three, separate, individual gods, two with a body, and one who is a spirit. RLDSism has a single God, who is a spirit, but is known as the Son because of the Incarnation. Christianity has a Trinity, a God who is three separate individuals, two of spirit, and one who has a physical body as a result of the incarnation.

The Christians say that LDSism and RLDSism are not "Christian" because of the difference in the Godhead. The RLDS say that the LDS are not RLDS, because of the polytheistic twist to the Godhead. The LDS say the RLDS are not Mormon, because they do not believe that God the father is a physical person who practices polygamy, with all its physical acts.

All three are ocmpletely different religions, with mere similarity in terminology and practices. RLDSism is a religion. There is no other name to call it by. So basically, what the court has done, is limit freedom of religion by telling the RLDS schisms that they must call themselves Mormons, or Christians, or LDS, but that they cannot call themselves RLDS.

At one time Daimler Benz owned Chrysler, and the rights to the names of all Chrysler products that Chrysler had ever made, including the names of the cars from the three independent car makers who were combined in the 1950's as AMC (purchased by Chrysler in 1987)

It is just as sensible to go into a Mercedes dealership and expect to find a Hudson Hornet for sale as it is to go into a Community of Christ expecting to hear RLDSism preached or taught. They just own the name. They are no more interested in RLDSism than Mercedes (Or Chrysler group, L.L.C.) is in the Rambler Marlin. When you file bankruptcy, you get the company, but get to shear it of any pesky investors (also referred to as the previous owners.) The CofC leadership was eager to go into moral bankruptcy when it learned that it could shear off any pesky RLDS who resisted the idea of cheap grace and get control of the investments.

You may question the comparison between the name of a defunct car company and the RLDS church, but when the name was changed to Community of Christ, that was the end of the last death rattle of the RLDS church. Like Amalikiah, the fifth columnists inside it poisoned it, because they wanted the name, its reputation, and all its real estate and investments, just as Amalickiah wanted the throne.

George
