Subject: CofC lenten scripture for Wednesday, March 30, 2011

Here is scripture from the CofC that illustrates why the CofC has such a problem with the Bible.

(Jesus speaks to his disciples about John the Baptist)

12 Verily, I say unto you, among them that are born of women, there hath not resen a greater than John the Baptist; notwithstanding, he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 And from the days of John the Baptists until now, the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. 13 But the days will come, when the violent shall have no power; for all the prophets and the law prophesied that it should be thus until John. 14 Yea, as many as have propheseied have foretold of these days. 15 And if ye will receive [it, verily, he was the Elisas, who was for to come and prepare all things.]

Note the phrase in brackets.

In the Joseph Smith Translation ms. designated NT-1 (New Testament ms. two), verse 15 reads And if ye will receive me, I am Elias, who was for to come

In JST ms. NT-2 the verse reads And if ye will receive him, verily, this is Elias, who was for to come, and I am Messiah.

The Inspired Version, or the Joseph Smith Translation has been declared by the RLDS church to be the last resort for settling doctrinal controversies in that church. But which reading of the I.V. is the correct one? The inspired prophet who was translating the scriptures died. There was no one with similar inspiration to work on preparing the Bible for publication, so a committee pored over the mss. and decided which variant readings belonged in the text. Neither the public nor the members were informed by footnote that any alternate readings exist. So we must assume that the church declared the I.V. text, as printed, to be the standard. Thus, the alternate readings should be ignored. Likewise, the NRSV should be ignored also, whereever it, too, disagrees with the printed text of the Inspired Version. Unless, of course, one is not RLDS. John does not appear to be an RLDS minister, despite the fact that the CofC regularly files lawsuits claiming to be the RLDS church.
