"Um.... I guess I just wanted to get away from home." she almost shrugs. That was partially the truth, and besides, he might not understand why she came here. She doesn't want to hurt his feelings, so she quickly adds, "Basically, I came here by accident, I was trying to get somewhere else, but my ship malfunctioned, and the shuttle heard my distress call, and picked me up. I suppose I could continue going to where I was headed, but I don't want to right now, maybe I can start over here. So, who do you plan to join, the Federation, or the Alliance?"
