Subject: Anybody else notice ?

It was fascinating how often the pattern played out during the guys' great stretch to close out the regular season and their stirring effort against a solid Rider team that featured the favorite for the preseason player of the year in Ryan Thompson and the excellent Ringgold . As our guys struggled at the start , Wesley and Ryan kept us competitive in the first half . How many games in the latter part of the year did Wesley make big shot after big shot in the first half when we were in danger of losing touch . Some like to say virtually all basketball games are won at the end . Those of us who watch a lot know that they are not won then or in the first five minutes of the second half or any other particilar stretch , but over the forty . That is what this team learned and or was taught in their second half run . So whenever I would worry we were losing touch in any of those games I would marvel at Wesley knocking down one after another clutch shots to keep us in the game . Yes , clutch shots can be made in the first half . At the risk of being repetitive , I will say again we are talking about a young man that just turned 19 and started for just one high school year . With an additional year and two of maturity , continued work on his game and maybe another three or minutes rest a game , I think he can make me look good when I said that he can be one of the best MAAC shooting guards ever .

Then , in the second half of these games ,as he did so well in the Rider game even though it was a loss , Nick takes over at what he does best . He recognizes when he has mismatches and knows how to maximize his advantages in these situations. Add in wanting the ball when a big play is needed and his foul-shooting , and he was a helluva second half player for us . So in this stretch , Wesley and Ryan have sort of been our Blanchard and Davis in a little different way , Mr. First Half and Mr. Second Half .

And what more can you say about Ryan . Since the first day , I saw him play at RU in the summer two years ago , I knew we had a special player and special person . I think posters twenty or thirty years from now , will talk about him like we talk about Harry and Elnardo and Pete and KeeKee and Rich and Billy as the best ever to don the blue and white . He is simply a joy to root for . He would not let Rider beat us without a fight to the finish .

And hopefully , JACK will be BACK . Just the worrier in me thinking back to Shane who was far from home . Hill has the potential to be among the very best of the conference's recruits this season .. I like to think that the staff and the other players have made this temporary home for him one that is special .

Anyway , from one SPC fan , to all the players and the staff, thanks for another fun year to put in the Peacock memory bank . Ish . thanks for all your play and leadership , and good luck out there . Akeem , please come back for another . In this economy , another year of education might not be a bad idea .

jajk, ever notice how many turnovers Wesley has? Puzzled me at first as he is an extremely smart/intuitive basketball player. Finally, figured it out at the Manhattan game where he was called for three walking violations almost in a row. Wes doesn't turn the ball over by making bad decisions or bad passes (most of the time) but has a little skip in his step usually when he comes off a pick or is making a move. So slight as to make it almost un noticeable but the refs have been calling it all season long.

If one goes by the stats alone, Wes would seem to be a careless passer or ballhandler, But he is not! Hope one of the staff notices and works with him on this tendency. The move is almost second nature with him. Indeed it's so natural that he is often quite quisical when he is whistled for traveling. Sort of like a great pitcher who has the flaw of tipping off his pitches. While this might seem minor Wes is called for traveling, at least once a game if not more. Looking for him, Ryan and Nick to be even better next year. As I've posted, I've never seen Belin but I believe that Darius will not only be a major contributor in his own right but will free up Ryan so that he will improve exponentially.

Is there a past Peacock (or current MAAC) player that comes to mind when you saw Conley workout?
Jerome Davis?
Ron Yates?
Kamal McQueen (circa freshman year)?
Ed Strong (going way back)
Tommy Best?
Alex Franklin (Siena)?
Schneider (Marist)?
Gadsen (Rider)?
Big Guy from Canisius?
Just trying to get a read on the type of player you saw....anybody who had a keen enough eye to see the potential in Nick Leon during the first third of this season is good enough in my book!
Appreciate it.

Loyal,

Haven't followed SPC basketball until the last two years. My memories go back to the 60's and early 70's. Friend of mine Pete O'Dea comes to mind but athletes today are somewhat different - bigger, stronger, potentially better but some are missing the "heart" and intensity of years ago.

In any event, the best way that I can describe Darius ( only have seen him play about four times ) is that he is big, strong and suprisingly mobile for his size. Looks like an intelligent player who is team oriented. Can play face to basket or back to basket. Once he boxes you out you will not rebound over him. Saw him put back several dunks that look like they were going to bring the rim down.

Four games cannot tell everything, but in those games he was matched up against Ryan Bacon and Darius more than held his own. Bacon, of course, now has another full season under his belt and has improved dramatically so I heasitate to compare them now. What I do see is that are complimentary type players. In other ways they both can play on the same court together and improve each others performance. As you know this is not always the case. In any event, even if Darius either needs time to get in game shape or is not quite as good as the player I saw - he should help, big time. LOL

Many names on that list I hope he reminds us of . Ed Strong was one of my favorite Peacocks to root for . Kamal had just great hands and moves , shame his knee(s) kept him from player he could have been .But I would love for it to be Tommy Best tho have a feeling that is not the one who Oldtimer is going to pick for us .
