Subject: another L

Watched on video stream . another bad first half down by 17 or so . But to the guys' credit , sparked by Wesley three on Akeem assist they went on 12-1 run to pull within four . But then Gregory who struggles against everyone but us and a walk-on opened it up again ; really over then but guys kept trying .Wesley four of eight from three and couple of steals , three rebounds in 39 min but still having trouble handling and finishing on slashes . played reasonable D against DD . Akeem should be applauded ; 38 minutes or so ; always trying and real good closing down of Schneider . Ryan 33 minutes and 10 rebounds plus couple of steals . Leon 14 points but 0 assists and 8 TOs .

No sign of Reid , Mumford or Kabongo tho my video went out for few minutes .

It's time for SPC to downsize to a D2 or D3 classification. No attempt is being made to improve most of the athletic teams. Men's basketball is a shambles and nobody wants to improve the situation. Money spent for the current teams can be re-directed to more worthwhile endeavors.

We have been reduced to "bragging" about team "playing hard" or "they came back to within 4 points after beibg down by 15".. Listen, making a run and losing means nothing unless you learn something and get better. This team is in a shambles and unless a REAL effort is made to improve, why do we insist in this embarrasment? I mean this is not a recent development.

[> [> [> Re:When will we face reality? -- loyal, Saturday, January 03, 01:18:16pm [1]

Team played hard, but is just not talented enough....we all know the drill by now.
On the plus side was a very active night by Bacon (Ryan is playing more consistently). Also, Wesley did some damage even though the Marist "D" knew where he was every time he crossed halfcourt.
On the other side of the coin, Hall, like Jasper Walker as a frosh, is absolutely no threat offensively and teams can play off him. Yet TBD is if Hall can ever overcome what I perceive to be his lack of quickness. We'll know whether or not he can be an above average MAAC point guard, later on in his career, by next season. Only a team with three other proven scorers can afford a point guard who is no threat to score....but, it's too early to judge.
Devezin (first game back in a few weeks??) could not be stopped....our guards can score, but are only adequate, at best, defensively.
I am passing on the trip to Albany Sunday....I am not a masochist! :>)

A poster on the MAAC board posted the following. What were your observations about what he was speaking about?

"4)Marist coaching staff works well together, good communication, calm demeanor with refs (St. Peters coach is a a high school coach with his antics and barking orders the whole game and telling his staff and players to shut up, sit down, get out the way, etc. JAJK, he is the reason St. Peters is struggling from what I saw. If I was a player, I would tune him out and he was dismissive to his staff and players on at least 3 occassions I observed. Bacon just needs more time, he is gonna be a good MAAC player. #31 was visibly limping from end of first half to end of game."

this poster is generally not a vicious poster and resonably fair in his comments.

Dunne was into it.

I didn't assess the situation the same way as the Marist poster. JD's behavior was far short of being out of control.

[> Re: another L -- jajk, Saturday, January 03, 03:14:40pm [1]

Loyal , I agree with your point about Hall's quickness being the big question . Particularly concerning to me since I always prefer the quick point that can open up the court , miscues be damned . But I will still be hopeful since I believe part of our perception about his play may well be due to Dunne's desire to control his point to limit mistakes . Sometimes a point's assertiveness , confidence and experience can make up in large part for some lack of quickness and some of a coach's inability to design an offense . I hope that Brandon stays upbeat since he has abilities and is our only hope at the point . As opposed to some other posters here , I have no problem watching and rooting for our guys if they are "playing hard" , whatever the outcome. Not being an insider , I have not the foggiest idea why we are where we are so I just root for the guys in each and every game . Watching Ryan , Akeem and Wesley last night was still fun though obviously a different outcome was hoped for .

A friendly poster on another board said that Akeem was obviously limping from the end of the first half til game's end . It wasn't apparent on the video stream , and I wondered if you noticed . If it was the case , it makes his 38 minute effort at both ends even more impressive

[> [> What did you think of your friendly poster's comment about Dunne. -- Peacock, Saturday, January 03, 04:04:30pm [1]

as quoted in my response to Loyal. I see also you have great respect for Dunne.

"Yankee , we found the KG secret . His two all game highs agin the Peacocks . Did you see Leon handle tonight ? That is the guy that JD decided was his point last year over Lampley . DD does make it easy for your shooters . Darrell would have done it for us if JD handled it right .Contrary to poster above , Ryan and Akeem are always trying for us . Congrats . Maybe we make it different in JC ."

You certainly do grasp at straws. You push hard for someone who only has a string at his disposal.

Your Marist observer fashions himself the Board comedian and arbitrarily throws out meaningless comments for show. Accepting this appraisal on seeing Dunne for the first time just shows how astute you are with your own observations. Then again, you demonstrated you learn little first hand, other than what is passed along by more astute observers.

For one claiming to be astute, you embarrasses yourself by not recognizing (or admitting), that jajk's comments come from another hemisphere (purposely or not). He's hyped Jenkin's as the best pure shooter in SPC history, Bacon, close to a Bill Russell in waiting, and Lampley as the most talented point guard in the league. Further, his inane comment that Darrell would have done it for us if JD had handled him right grossly distorts the truth and implies that Dunne had something to do with his poor court presence and ultimate dismissal. Fact is, if not an athlete, Lampley would have been gone after his second school infraction.

Unlike some, at least jajk brings some wit and humor to the table.

I put it out there for Loyal to answer as he was there and did not alter anyhting and only said the person is not one of the vicious posters. You on the other hand, not even being there go off into the standard knee jerk attack. Calm down as I think you protest too much. In fact I believe this establishes you as one who will speak on virtually anything he knows nothing about. As I said "Knowledge for Dummies"

As far a jajk goes he went over the top in his initial assessment, but as you might remember I also felt Lampley would have been the better choice as the PG. That part is over and done with, but now I see all the questions on the choice and ask about all those astute needs everyone talked about last year. It is in retrospect, but one might wonder about talent evaluation of your revered coach, who needs another 10 years to distinguish himself, when he by passes a kid that wanted to come to SPC, had his coach say in print that it was going to happen, and then wind up seeing him outperform Dunne's choice at Iona, a school despite their record you seem to think is the Shangri-la for mid majors.

When one looks for agendas, an inspection of your premises will show that you create your foundation while I stay with what is shown on the floor. [> [> [> [> [> One more note -- Sludge, Saturday, January 03, 10:35:19pm [1]

While I have questioned some of JD's recruiting choices I think you might want to go back and consider the circumstance when he passed on Jenkins. At that time we had three midgets in the backcourt in Lampley, Leon, and Mumford. The goal was to go bigger in Hall. Maybe not the right choice but I don't recall anyone arguing for the 5'9" Jenkins at the time.

All of the above notwithstanding, Jenkins has proven nothing as yet at Iona. In fact, they appear as much in the stink hole as us, despite all of the advance hype.

[> [> [> [> [> [> I never bought into the midget arguments -- Peacock, Sunday, January 04, 03:46:34pm [1]

They were no arguments either way on Hall versus Jenkins, but having watched Jenkins I did see a much faster player with offensive skills. And you have watched how many Iona games. Does make a case for talent evaluation.

with amount of guards at Iona, he must be doing soemthing right to get the minutes. As usual, I doubt you have even seen on game Jenkins played in but did not stop you from commenting. There have been a few on TV.

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> Even watching in person wouldn't help you -- Sludge, Sunday, January 04, 08:04:25pm [1]

Since you repeatedly have shown yourself incapable of judging talent.

Maybe in this case you have received your Iona insight from the baffoon of the MAAC Board, Guy F, who gets as many things right as your southpaw admirer and Banking Committee Chair, Barney Frank.

Try absorbing this. Jenkins is getting playing time for Iona simply because none of the others are capable of finding the ocean (or basket), even when they fall into it. Machudo (sp), who we never went hard after, is their favored point, but has shooting skills much like that of Hall.

Maybe you should go back and try to amuse and entertain us with tales of how Stein first sought out Orr for the head job.

Like it or not you continue to constantly stray off target. The comparison is Jenkins and Hall, as Machado was never in cosideration. Have you ever answered a question without shifting. Must be the load in your pants that keep you in such a mental state. Yet being the miscreant you are, you throw in Machado, who while shooting poorly can run circles around Hall before he could dribble once. In fact it is you and your dummy observer friend who have waxed constantly on guards for the last two seasons and keep excusing the errors as no one wants to come to the school. Since Iona shoots as poorly as we do why are the players you are now taking shots out outperforming your boy's prized picks.

The info on Orr came directly from Stein, but I doubt you would even be aware of it as you are seldom aware of anything other than Palin for President, the sign of a responsible party supported by comatose supporters such as yourself. Giess you still can't get over the election as politics must inhabit 98% of that small intellect you possess. By the way maybe Frank can't get anything right, but I'll bet he would come closer to identifying how many houses he owns.

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> Mr. Congenialty gets it worng again -- Sludge, Monday, January 05, 06:34:17pm [1]

Is it your congenital anger that prevents you from seeing anything clearly or do you persist in such a burlesque fashion simply as a means to vent your acute aggressions?

Who, but you, brings Machado into the discussion by stating that Jenkins has received playing time even though Iona has "a number of other guards". To help with your understanding, please read carefully that Machado is one of those "other guards", and a point guard at that, who logically would compete with Jenkins for playing time. Because shooting has thus far been his weakness, I suggested that it was one of the reasons Jenkins was receiving more time. In keeping with your rather transparent agenda, you now want to show how Jenkins would have been a better choice for us over Hall. While I offered that our choice was made more on size (Jenkins too closely resembling our other midgets), you took it as another not so subtle attempt to attack Dunne and his recruiting choices. Funny, I must have missed somewhere one of your insightful accounts of where the choice should have been Jenkins. Of course, true to form, you will likely have me on record claiming that Hall is the better guard.

Now, another area that seems to touch your delicate sensitivities and allows you to showcase further your ignorance. How can I be disappointed in the election when I have pundits like you educating me on how irresponsible it is for a party to select the "inexperienced" Palin as choice for Vice President (not Pres). Why it would be almost as ludicrous as say, some pussy-chasing, alcoholic, almost comatose Senator trying to promote his moribund, YOU KNOW, niece to serve at his side in Washington. Finally, since you wish to fall deeper into and make your own embarrassment; I am much more comfortable with an individual who's wife has the resources to own seven houses rather than one who receives property from a convicted felon, John Mesko (sp). Of course, I'm sure we can dismiss this as just another dastardly and racist attempt by the vast right wing conspiratists to defame the already-acclaimed, best President since Lincoln. Why next we might even expect these zealots to raise false accounts that one of our new cabinet choices might be stepping down due to a pending federal investigation into his fund raising activities.

My, Mr. Peacock, you certainly do share a lot of the same attributes as your fellow travelers. YOU KNOW.

I usally do not get into posting on these forums, however since I know, like and have seen both of these kids play at the High School level I feel it necessary to share this info with you. First these two scrimaged each other during their Jr and Sr years (ask KB about the match up)Jermel was fotunate enough to be able to share the handling of the ball since he was surrounded by the likes of Cory Fisher,Dexter Stricklin,Kevin Bole Jr and several other outstanding guards who played at point, this is not a knock but it allowed him the freedom at times to score more.Brandon on the other hand had to focus primarily on running the team since he was not surrounded by several superstars but more so scorers. Now it seems as if he is adjusting to being around players with exceptional abilities.
Speed- Jermel was known for his speed at the point.Brandon was also however he was out 4 months prior to this season with a broken foot and returned right at the start of the season and had to get in condition while in season. If you look at the current stats Jermel has a higher 3pt and overall FG percentage, but keep in mind there is more to basketball then just scoring-steals,assist,rebounds,turn over,to ratio, foul shooting which neither is doing that well at this time but based on their history they will correct it,check out the stats ,I think overall Hall may be leading(for your info, assist are an offensive scoring contribution 56= no less than 112 pts)
Both of them come from winning programs however even though there are some similarities they each specialize in specifics. HAS IT EVER OCCURED TO YOU THAT JERMEL MAY NOT HAVE WANTED TO COME TO SP he was offered way before Brandon as SP found out about Hall at the end of the season( He was seriously being pursued by Felician and Morehead College).Because of the staff, school and personal reason he accepted SP offer.
Who is the better player, they both are, Jermel has been on and lead several state championship teams, as well as Brandon who has a state sectional title and all county and all area (with DL and D.Wade)2 straighth years. He also made 3rd team all state so do you really think that JD made that bad of a choice.Learn the game first and then make your assesments.Where did you play hs and college ball and what are your accomplihments on the state level.
Jermel and Brandon don't pay attention to this want a be, your both good at what you do and you both should have stellar careers

[> [> Re: another L -- oldtimer#1, Saturday, January 03, 06:55:25pm [1]

Jajk, we all want Hall to be more offensively minded. Believe I was one of the first to post such. However, your "guess" or attempt at mind reading is not valid. JD has stated that he wants Hall to shoot more. Feels that defenders are playing the pass and need to respect Brandon as a offensive threat. This "control" stuff seems to have taken on a life of it's own, as your supposition shows.

Also interesting is this so-called evaluation of Dunne's sideline behavior. How quickly we forget that several posters criticized Dunne last year for being to passive on the sidelines. This year, and Cindy and SPC Fan should vouch for this, JDs sideline mannerisms have been good. More proactive but nowhere near the description given. Don't know what happened at Marist but it's not in keeping with what those of us who attend the games have observed this year

Point is that the man's record has and will continue to speak for itself. Let's stop mind reading and guessing that it's now his personality that is causing all our problems. Many would kill to have Bob Hurley Sr. coach this team and I guarantee you that a word will not be said about "control" issues. Winning brings everyone together, losing brings out all this kind of stuff

[> [> [> Re: another L -- Peacock, Saturday, January 03, 08:46:34pm [1]

Sometimes partisans will look favorably on things that are not exactly right, much like the proverbial comment "It can't be my boy, he would never do such a thing". The particular quote was not made with any derision or attempt to denigrate SPC. Certain aspects of it ring very true and was brought up last year about the participation of the staff which you did go wild on. Not bringing that issue up again, but I have heard comments about berating certain players he has shown tendencies to not give much rope to many players. Fear of making a mistake has been mentioned on this board by others. So before you go into the defense mode ask your self if you have seen certain tendencies in this direction. I have although not to this degree. Do you think he takes advice. Wins might change things, but the negativity on Leckie came out well after he put up wins. Wins don't always solve everything but do soften the issues in question. By the way, I think this blows the 8-8 need. And while you seem to not agree but personality just might be an issue. Few of us are there at the interactions, but we do know that he doesn't think well enough to send out thank you letters to contributors per SPCFans post. I only got one from Eliot, but my contribution was sent to Dunne.

[> [> [> [> Re: another L -- oldtimer#1, Sunday, January 04, 08:20:50am [1]

See Loyal's post above which disagrees with the Marist poster and confirms what I posted above. With regard to the other criticisms on personality we are getting into a very subjective evaluation area. Moreso because mosts posts are based on limited observation. As you point out few if any attend practice sessions and are only guessing when they post. Jajk's post was one such example.

To repeat my take. Performance on the court is what matters. In Dunne's case he probably leans to the disciplinary side when compared to the prior regime. However, his approach nowhere nears the label of stern disciplinarian. For a college coach he probably falls somewhere in the middle between lax and stern. Does he have favorites? All coaches do, but only because he believes rightly or wrongly that the guys he gives the most playing time to are the ones who belong on the court. Question his judgement but not his motives. The guy wants to win and with all coaches is subject to second guessing. It's part of the profession. With JD's record there will be plenty of that.

[> [> [> Re: another L -- SPC Fan, Monday, January 05, 07:30:32am [1]

I agree with oldtimer, Dunne's sideline demeanor is more active and better this year. The last two years he was way too passive. One of my criticism's from the Monmouth game was very passive lay back and watch us get taken to the cleaners.
Demeanor aside, wins and losses are the ultimate test.many coaches are succesfull either way.
