Subject: Siena Posters

I would encourage everyone to read jajk's post below regarding SOME Siena fans. Jajk (who I do not know) has been wageing a one man battle on several MAAC boards often tweaking, sometimes arguing but always with humor going after some of these egotistical idiots.

On behalf of full disclosure I have been friends for years with one of the parents of a Siena starter. Great people and a super kid. Many of the other Siena people I have met are equally quality people. However, some of these serial posters are over the top. In some recent posts, as jajk pointed out, they have denegrated our school, our team , our facilities and our city. The one thing they couldn't denegrate was the value of an SPC degree because if they wanted to pursue that type of argument they would lose hands down. Just a brief listing of some of our graduates and their achievements (CEO's, Professionals etc.) would put them to shame.

As far as the city, and I am not a resident, while much of what is said has truth, the waterfront part of Jersey City and it's resurgence is as spectular place as any in this country. Finally, one of their know it all posters, who fancies himself a golfer (see his post with Sludge below) should know that five minutes from our campus is Liberty National one of the more talked about places in the country and host of this years Barclay's Invitational. Jersey City has a lot to offer and without putting down the Albany area the resurgence of Jersey City as well as our proximity to NYC is beginning to pay off recruiting wise.

Getting back to basketball. One of their idiots posted that Hasbrook "schooled" both Jenkins and Leon in last night's game. Gave little or no respect to Jenkins implying that most of his shots were off broken plays. Now Hasbrook is a great player and our posters gave him the credit he deserves. However, why not give Wesley and Nick some credit for the way they played???? By the way, that poster obviously knows very little basketball as many of Hasbrooks looks were wide open. He put on a performance but didn't "school" anyone. SPC played some zone and when we were in man Wes and others were forced to help in rebounding (we were outrebounded badly) with Bacon on the bench in foul trouble. The choice was to give help inside and leave the outside shot free. Wesley, by the way, had 8 boards not bad for a guard! Give Hasbrook all the credit in the world but don't denigrate a rising Sophomore who put up the numbers Wesley did last night.

One last comment. These few posters to whom I refer often over hype everything Siena. I was once chasticized by them for mentioning their incoming "stud" OD Anosike in the same sentence with Darius Conley. They've posted endlessly about OD and his supposed looks by Big East teams. They are newspaper clipping readers. As jajk has pointed out, once you get below the top one hundred players or so in the country everything sort of becomes a crap shoot. Anosike is a nice player with great upside but it may be of interest to note that he is struggling a bit this year for his high school team. I know because I've seen him play over a half dozen times. So does recruiting guru Tom K. who calls Anosike a work in progress. Conley, and now of course, Belin are not worthy of discussion. Well just let's see! Ryan Bacon and Wesley Jenkins are doing just fine but, of course, they were recruited by SPC not Siena.

Things have a way of changing. Next year should be a very interesting one in the MAAC conference.

Well said!!

I visited the Siena board yesterday and saw some of the denegrating posts regarding the campus, Jersey City, etc. Obviously, as you point out, no one is paying attention to the renaissance that is taking hold in Jersey City and the SPC Campus area. I work nearby in Weehawken and get to the Old U on occasion for games, to visit the bookstore (my daughter proudly wears her sweatshirt to middle school practically on a daily basis), speak to Fr. Lynch and some of the other Jesuits, etc. What Dr. Cornaccia is doing in terms of improving facilities is great so far. It will only be a matter of time before Yanatelli Center also sees some upgrades.

Bottom line, the school is showing improvement including our basketball program. I think we will be significantly improved next season. Dare I say, we may even make some noise come MAAC Tourney time.

One final word on some of the Siena posters. At times they are as delusional as some of the Fairfield posters in recent years. However, I will give their team their due. They are a very good squad and they should enjoy them without lowering themselves by denegrating the other MAAC schools. Remember that success in the MAAC Conference is cyclical. No one stays on top forever. It wasn't that long ago that Manhattan and Iona ruled the conference and are now struggling.

Look, we simply can not take this attitude. It's a loser attitude. This is one of those situations where the adage applies: Don't get bitter, get better.

We have no right to complain about Siena idiot posters or their high and mighty attitude. They have earned it. Our focus should be aimed solely at Peacock athletics and the various steps that need to be taken to even come close to the reaching the level at which Siena performs.

The simple fact is that Kenny Hasbrouck is much better than anyone on our team and he would easily be the second best player we've had in the past 10 years. We need to do the things that will allow us to recruit players like that. Now, Siena gets good players because they play in big arena with large, enthusiastic and dim-witted crowds. But, they have to have those things because they're located miles away from anywhere in a shitty part of the country.

We need to do the same things. We need to minimize our weaknesses (facilities, exposure) and maximize our strengths (location). We simply must either upgrade the Yanitelli Center or move all homes games to an upgraded Armory. We need chairback seats, a center court scoreboard and better sound.

We also have to do something to draw in more fans. We need to advertise, we need drum up support on campus. I understand the economy is pathetic right now, but it'll turn around. We need to be ready to go out and get those sponsors and advertisers when they're ready to spend money again. I hope, at the very least, some effort is being made to draw a crowd for the Marist game, which will be on television.

Our program is in shambles. We need to get our house in order now. The MAAC would have every right to kick us out. Rich Ensor is not going to be commissioner forever and that "charter member" bullshit is going to stop flying soon. For us to sit here and complain about Siena would be like Apollo Creed's fans complaining about the lack of class by Drago's supporters. Guess what, you guy is DEAD. The fight is over, you lost.

Is this an Apollo Creed or Obama quote?

I would concide and have stated that Kenny Hasbrook is an outstanding player. However, I would not concede that Wesley Jenkins, a sophomore, will not achieve the same status that you attribute to Hasbrook. Recruiting Jenkins and Bacon has matched any player Siena has recruited in the sophomore class. Not to acknowledge that is defeatist.

I agree we have a long way to go but not to recognize some of the positives that are taking place is just as much defeatist. Our kids are not playing that way and those few of us who attend the games are noticing the difference. The real question is can we continue to build on what is taking place. On that the jury is still out.

I have no problem with the effort of the players. They continued to play hard and represented themselves well. On at least three occasions, a player got on the floor after a ball. By the way, I'm not sure if our fans know this, but when a player dives on the floor for a loose ball, that's when you cheer. It doesn't matter if we're down 15. Applaud the effort.

Your gym smells of chlorine and has an assinine set up (why no entry from the parking garage). You have some nice pieces with Jenkins, the PG, and Bacon. Dunne was right to run off the others. Dunne, a former Siena assistant, I would add.

We had to treat the gym for the green-clad hicks that would be showing up.

Oldtimer , I appreciated your post . It articulated what I flail about at times on this board and the MAAC board . And to emphasize , we are talking about a small group from the Siena fan base , Unfortunately , while their numbers are a limited to a handful or two , they are the most vocal by far .

These posters have just not learned that you can applaud your players and program without demeaning those of other schools in your own conference . As I here mentioned here before ,I was lucky enough to know Charlie Brown growing up so I lived and died with Siena when Marc played there . I was also a big fan of the way Doremus Bennerman played the game so I followed Siena closely during his career . Being they were a MAAC team representing a fellow small Catholic school made that rooting all the more enjoyable . And as we and other SPC fans have said , their current team is a highly talented group for our conference . But I do find it less fun rooting for them these days when this group of their fans go out of their way to demean our school .

Often they attempt to justify their desire to kick us out of the MAAC with diatribes about our underfunding of the basketball and other sports programs . My reaction to this as a Jersey City kid is that they should mind their own freakin business . It is great that they have their arena and their media attention in the Albany market . They like to say over and over again 'don't get bitter , get better '. I say get the freak over it and deal with reality . You are a member of a conference of small schools . Don't waste your time criticizing other schools in your confrence , use it all to get your administration to move your school to another conference . There was a fine MAAC before Siena and there will be a fine one if Siena leaves .

Do I envy aspects of the Siena program . Not their wins ,we have had them and more . Not their players ,I love to root for our guys . Not their arena , I think Yanitelli is a great place to watch a college basketball game . I'll take being close to the action over a big arena any day of the week . I'll take the atmosphere of the SPC and Manhattan full house ( yes it was only three years ago )over that garbage bag filled arena that Siena has any day of the week. At its best , Yanitelli is the smaller school part of mid-major basketball at its best .But their is one thing that I do envy and that is their fan base , their attendance . While we are a totally different market than Siena I would hope that all of us in the SPC community would make every effort to improve this . Certainly winning helps here , but the administration has to improve their efforts here significantly . But the last thing we need is for Siena fans to tell us how to do it . Tend to your own situation . Things can change quite quickly .

I understand that individual school boards and conference boards have different reasons for being . At their best , conference boards are about sharing information , differing opinions about players and games ,and rooting for all the schools . But obviously , they also involve all of us revisiting our youth with a little trash talk . But this group of Siena fans clearly go over the line when mocking our players ,program ,neighborhhoods and city .

I would just like to end by mentioning that which I found recently to the most egregious example of the foul behavior of this group of Siena fans . Before the Siena and Holy Cross game , a Cross fan brought up his fantasy Catholic school conference for HC to be a member of . It included a number of current MAAC schools , including Siena and SPC . Two of the Siena fans from the group that I am talking about went on the board of a school from another conference to detail that while this was a good idea , it definitely should not include SPC because we did not live up to their defined standards . Denigrating another school in your own conference on the board of a school outside the conference is about as low as you can go .

I had misgivings about beginning this thread on our board . But I guess the shots being taken on the Siena board got the best of me . With apologies ,I hope that this post will end it and allow it return to what it should be all about - the guys and gals representing SPC.

Unlike you, I want the Peacocks to succeed. I'm just tired of burying my head in the sand. By the way, nice job getting back to .500 after starting out 1-9.
