The bay mare canters in from Open Valley, her heart heavy. She moves quickly past the herd, and heads toward a knoll some distance away. Reaching it, she stops, and turns to face the dark peaks in the distance, knowing Triumph is there. She drops her head as a tear slides down her face. She does not turn to look at the other horses, only watches the forboding peaks. Though hungry, she does not lower her head to graze, and though thirsty, she does not move toward the stream. She stands, alone, closing her eyes sometimes, thinking of the first time she saw the ebony stallion, and of the last.
