The story you are looking for is "Grains of Paradise" by James Street. It is a pepper-eating contest between the Ladinos and the Indians. The Ladinos use visiting Cordell Hoyle as their contestant. Although Hoyle (Pete) is winning the contest, he suddenly reaches for the tortilla, to end the burning in his mouth, and the Indians win. Why did he doit? Was it right or wrong?
