I think almost all of us here feel that XF dragged on too long. The perfect time to end it would have been at the end of season seven.
As an alternative to ending it as a TV series (not perfect, but better than what we got) they should have ended the Mulder/Scully years at the end of season eight and allowed Doggett and Reyes to go it alone as the "TV XF partners" during season nine, while saving Mulder and Scully to be the "movie XF couple". . .sort of like they did with "Star Trek" and "Star Trek: The Next Generation"; Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, et al were doing movies while Captain Picard and his crew were doing TV shows.
