I just wanted to comment on the bit about knowing the final outcome -- whether we liked it or not.
IMHO, that's the great thing about fan fiction; those of us who didn't like the "official" ending to the series can construct our own versions of what M&S are doing now. Loathe though I am to admit it, these are *FICTIONAL* characters which means they're not "really" doing anything. A failure to accept disappointing turns of events in real life is a sign of instability or immaturity, but we *can* refuse to acknowledge the "reality" of CC's version of how XF ended.
For a different producer or a different type of TV show, I might be more inclined to accept the "official" version, but CC kind of dug his own grave on this issue. For instance, given the number of characters he had "die" over the years (Mulder, Krycek, CSM, Jeff Spender, etc.) only to bring them back a season or two later, CC can't honestly expect *ANYBODY* to believe that the Lone Gunmen are "really" dead.
