Subject: Ratings and ramblings (very vague S9 spoilers)

Maybe this has already been discussed in depth on the season nine board (I wouldn't know, because I haven't visited there) but the current Mulderless/Scullylite edition of "XF" isn't doing all that well in the Nielsen ratings. The season premiere came in at 55th and the second ep of the season was 63rd. Last night, apparently, they pre-empted XF to show a "Star Wars" movie. They probably made the decision to air this on the last Sunday in November long before the ratings came in, but it does seem to indicate a lack of confidence in this season's XF on the part of Fox execs. They *never* pre-empted XF in a sweeps month during seasons 4-7.
I feel kinda sorry for Gillian Anderson; I'm betting she really regrets not leaving with DD at the end of last season, no matter how much money she may be making this year. I think the perception, in the minds of a lot of people, is "David Duchovny left the show and it's gone downhill; ergo, he was the most important element of the show". But the same thing most likely would have happened if GA had left and DD had stayed. I've never believe that Mulder was more important than Scully or vice versa — I'd have no more interest in watching Mulder without Scully than I do in watching Scully without Mulder - it was the relationship between them that drew me, and millions of others, to XF. (I don't necessarily mean "relationship" in the shipper-sense, since it wasn't a romantic/sexual relationship until at least season six; just the interaction between the two characters.)
Whether the dwindling ratings will mean this "final season" of XF will be the *real* final season, is anybody's guess. The Fox execs have made it clear they will cancel the series only when it no longer draws the audience its advertisers want; which, I guess, makes sense from a business viewpoint, no matter how much it bites as an artistic one.
In happier news. . ."all things, the season seven guide to "The X-Files" is now available at bookstores. I'm hoping to get it for Christmas, as it gives in-depth reviews of all the season seven eps, as well as brief listings of all the eps from seasons 1-6.
