You're right about the datedness of 50s sci-fi on the cultural front. Puppet Masters did have a woman go into the action but of course the male agent (wish I could remember names) was totally macho and saved her and she swoons for him after the initial icey reception.

I never read Starship Troopers but recall the movie having males and females serving in the armed forces together. I remember hearing that in the novel, the main character is a Filipino which was a bit of a shock at the time as heroes were almost always white.

Some sci-fi writers did have women that were more than wimps crying for rescue but they usually end up in the male hero's arms at the end and all's right with the world. Kind of like how James Bond meets some kick ass ladies in his adventures but no matter how idependent they are, they all end up on their backsides under him saying "oh, James!"
