Detoured has twigged the most obvious thing : that Anne's criticism and meanness is all an act. I had read that some of the American contestants were getting wound up by Anne and had started to answer back in all seriousness. In the British version, we know Anne Robinson, of course, from her many years as a people's *champion* (Det - AR used to present a very long running comsumer show called Watchdog) so the British contestants just love her sarcasm. It's the sort of attack she might have launched at the boss of British Telecom or Hoover. You have to appreciate an ironic sense of humour and you can laugh along with both Anne and the contestants. It's fun when she nabs, say, a geography student for not knowing which town is further south, between Leeds and - say - Grantham!

Funnily enough, I can't stand AR in real life, but I like the Weakest Link. (Oh and I agree it is very annoying when she says "Lets play - The Weakest Link")
