I agree, it would me *AWFUL*!!! The thing about it is, I think DD has put himself in kind of a Catch-22 situation. As long as he stays with the show, it will get good ratings and won't be cancelled. For the show to get cancelled, he'll have to leave.
I think the best thing we can hope for is that there is a DRAMATIC difference between the ratings for the various episodes this year, with the "Mulder" eps doing much better than the "Mulderless" eps! Then, maybe, the Fox execs will realize that it's not worth the money they're paying to CC, GA, etc. to produce an entire season of "XF" without Mulder. ("XF" is one of the most expensive — if not the most expensive — hours of American television to produce. This is partially due to the salaries CC, DD and GA are paid, but a lot of it has to do with the extensive special effects, etc.)
I have been saying for a long time that they are shooting themselves in the foot by doing an eighth season with DD in only half the eps. They are ruining their chance to create an enduring movie franchise by alienating both their core audience and the star of the show.
Quite frankly, I don't think DD would believe him if they promised him the 9th season would be the last one, and I wouldn't blame him. If I remember correctly, his original contract only ran through five seasons and he seriously considered leaving the show then. He wanted to do only five seasons of a TV series then continue the "XF" concept in movies and be able to star in other movies rather than be tied to the grind of weekly TV series. He finally agreed to stick with "XF" through the end of the seventh season because 1.) They moved production of the show to California.
2.) They promised him "XF" would end as a TV series after seven years and begin shooting a second "XF" movie at that time.
Since they went back on their promise — not just to DD, but to the fans — to end the series after seven season, could we really trust them to end it after nine seasons?? Or would they "promise" that the ninth season would be the last then decide, at the last minute, to go ahead with a tenth season??
I would much rather be looking forward to another "XF" movie next summer than the "Mulderlite" season 8 we're going to get instead.
