The Twilight Zone springs to mind. TXF isn't typical genre Sci Fi. It doesn't play heavily to that type of stories that deal with technology, space travel or futuristic ideas. Sometimes it does. But like Zone, it's more all about things that can be disturbing to people. It's what scares you but in a more realistic, earthly way.
The episode Monday even borrowed heavily from a Zone ep.

I guess it's also a bit similar in style to shows like Night Gallery and The Evil Touch, two anthology series.
All these shows dealt with single story ideas without any running thread.

The big difference between TXF and The Night Stalker is of course the Mulder-Scully dynamic. And even though I didn't watch it much, from what I've heard their relationship is similar in style to the couple on The Avengers. I think CC has acknowledged that influence as well. I'm surprised in all these years that there was never a reference to that show and to Steed (is hat hs name?) and Peel like with the Rocky and Bullwinkle mention.

I nenver saw Probe but when I saw Mulder losing his limbs in Kilswitch that sent me straight back to an old horror film called Sc tam and Scream Again! AHHHHHHH!
Speaking of films, one that I think TFX is similar in style too is Invasion of the Bodysnatchers. That feeling of fear is what works best and TXF should do that more rather than blatant icky monsters.
