Subject: Comparisons of the two Southern California eps this season

Well, for some bizarre reason the producers of XF decided to set two of the first eight eps this season in Southern California. (Gee, could it be because that's where the show is filmed?) But "The Amazing Maleeni" was one of the best eps so far this season, IMHO, while "Hungry" is by far the worst of Season Seven.
What made one so good and the other so bad?
1.) "The Amazing Maleeni" was an actual *MYSTERY*, whereas in "Hungry" we knew who the villain was within the first five minutes. Okay, according to some of the other posts, some of you had this one figured out by half-time, but *I* was kept guessing until the last few minutes.
2.) Mulder and Scully were actually *IN* almost every scene of this ep, as oppossed to only making cameo appearances in "Hungry".
3.) This one actually made use of the Southern California ambience. "Hungry" could have been set in any large metropolitan area. I think they just had it be there because they were too lazy to pretend it was Phoenix, Atlanta or wherever.
4.) This was one of the very few, rare cases where Scully was actually "right" in the sense that there was nothing supernatural going on. It was, so to speak, all done with mirrors. The MOTW in "Hungry" was kind of a tired retread of the ones from Squeeze/Toom/2Shy.
5.) This one had some vaguely shippy elements. I always get a kick when someone assumes M&S are married, like the guy in the bank did. And that bit where Mulder grabbed Scully's nose almost reminded me of the baseball scene at the end of "The Unnatural". Not as long or as shippy, alas, but the same attitude of playfulness.
Note to anyone from 1013 Productions who might happen to be reading this: No more Southern California eps this season, please. Two is enough.
