Maybe this is a naive question, but. . .

Could someone please explain that "dressing to the right or dressing to the left" conversation that Garry Shandling and Mulder were having in "Hollywood, A.D."? I ran across the phrase "dressing to the left" in a book recently, but it didn't make any more sense to me there than it did in this XF ep.
