If anybody wants to read a pretty good book on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, I would like to suggest the following one:

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: A guide for Families and Communities by Ann Streissguth (Brookes Publishing Company)

From the workshops and classwork that I have been to and done, there are experts who say absolutely NO Alcohol during pregnancy. Unfortunately, some of the families who have strictly adhered to this still have children in Special Ed. classes (with other disabilities). Then there are those women who drank heavily throughout their pregnancy--ending up with a child with FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome) or FAE (Fetal Alcohol Effects). Women who drink heavily for the first 3-4 months and then quit might luck out and have a child with FAE which is serious but not as devastating as FAS. Women who might have been intoxicated when they conceived may still have a healthy baby if they don't drink anymore after that. Still though, the ideal situation would have no alcohol at all. (BTW there is research going on which looks at an alcoholic father's effects on the baby too!)

Anyway one looks at it, the health of a baby depends on a lot of factors. What I have been able to find, is that women to suspect they are pregnant and stop drinking can have a typical child (I hate the word normal--haven't a clue what that REALLY means!) I guess we will just have to wait for the next nine months (or whatever 9 months on TV really adds up to be) in order to check this all out!
