Subject: More Theef Musings.

Um, I 'guess' I liked Theef... ;) My new resolution of just chillin' and watchin' whats served up on the ole XFiles platter these few last remaining episodes without looking for deeper meaning must have worked. Still disgruntled, I thought fer sur I wouldn't like this one either. But, I actually enjoyed this episode. To me it's one of the better episodes of this season. Theef reminded me of the "old" MOTW episodes.

Usually the characters in the episodes are not as well fleshed-out as the doctor. I liked Dr. Wieder. He was a character I cared about. I was surprised the had so much screen time especially that he did his own investigative work, and I liked this change of events. Umm, makes you wonder what Mulder and Scully were up to while Dr. Wieder was searching through files... ha! I liked that he was strong of character and compassionate, and a good doctor as well. When Mulder and Scully were first questioning him I was fooled just for a minute that he might be a person with a terrible past or secret life ( and by the look on Mulder's face he was suspicious too ), so was pleasantly surprised he was strong and "good".

I also liked the lady apothecary, or whatever she was, in that she wasn't made to be a "nutcase" or weirdo. Or at least to me she wasn't. *S* She was a nice strong supporting character.

I enjoyed the opening banter between Mulder and Scully, even if it was a plot convenience just to fill us, the viewing audience, in with the details. Still, somehow it worked ok. And the whole "guessing" word play was too cute, but, also worked somehow.

And wasn't it interesting that Scully was forced to consider the alternative theory, esp that it involved her speciality - medical practice - she had to consider Pettie's claims based on what she had witnessed; that it 'jumped up and bit her on the ass', and _this_ time she was coherent.. Could he have healed his daughter had he been there for her? It'll keep her guessing.. *S* I felt this was a nice continuation of her "enlightenment" we have experienced this season. I too, enjoyed the last whisper from Mulder about her keeping him guessing. A nice little icing on the cake. "Guess" we'll all interpret it differently.

Peattie was alittle much ..but.. that's ok. *S* I thought for sure he was going to be something other than mortal and was taken alittle by surprise he was just an "ordinary" human, well, maybe not ordinary, *S*, at the end, but mortal anyway. I didn't roll my eyes so much at Pettie claiming not to know about microwave ovens when clearly he did, as I did that he knew how to operate that one first try. < pout > My popcorn is never that perfect even with a microwave I've operated for years. I thought he was just playing his "country bunkin" routine for effect. Come on, how long does it take *you* to figure out your neighbors or relative's microwave? They all seem to be programmed differently.

The special effects were good. The steam coming from the freshly popped pop corn was a nice touch. I thought the "bubbles" popping out on the doctor's wife's face was very well done. At least with my reception of the FOX network it looked well done. Scully's sightless contacts were interesting too and looked "real". Several scenes looked properly "Vancouver-ish", but it took place in California, so - so whats the point?

The episode wasn't without it's problems. Gee, the temptation is just too strong - where IS my prozac!? Is it just me or was the music rather intrusive in this episode? In some places it was effectively creepy and added to the atmosphere, but at other times I found it annoying, and usually I never do. Weirdness. I had trouble with little things - the nits, pardon me, like how Pettie could have robbed his daughter's grave in that very busy cemetary without anyone noticing. And the time frame when the father-in-law is killed, or kills himself, and "I'm" a skeptic about that theory, is just too swift. The motion detector is set off and there's only seconds, minutes maybe for this guy to cut himself enough to paint bloody words on the wall, then hang himself or be hung before the good doctor gets downstairs. (Oh, I get it; it's magic.) And how'd Peattie get in and out of that house like he did in the first place with the elaborate security system? Oh, and the umbrellas at cemetery scene. It was drizzly some of the time and some of the time I saw alot of brightness as if the sun was out. At least DD has learned to keep the handle of the umbrella turned in the same direction in all the scenes ... Ahh, but that's ok, these things are part of the XFiles signature....

No, not a favorite of mine either, but not all that bad either, IMHO.

Mulder: "Mulder, why are we here?" ROTFLMAO
