Subject: FPS: Mulder and Scully play laser tag

Hi all! I've been absent this week because I've been super busy (not that you guys aren't). Anyway, I know it's late, but here's my XF homework. Do you accept late reports? I did enjoy FPS although it could have been better. Best Special Effects for S7 remain with Rush, and Kill Switch was definitely cooler than FPS. I got to read the posts below, so I won't be repeating too much.

First of all, I totally disagree with the stance most of you have on virtual reality games. Are you all anti-football as well? Like VR, sports is also an outlet for agression, an exciting method of competition, an opportunity to gain mastery in an activity, and an art. Is football anything more than men running at eachother at high speeds? Hell yes. Is VR anything more than guys blowing the crap out of eachother, anything more than mindless violence? Again, yes. Not everybody relieves stress by taking a bubble bath. Also, creating the VR games requires not only technical skill, but art as well. VR is very much a creative process. As for techies wasting their talent and energy on VR when they could be concentrating on curing the world of all its problems or other "important stuff," virtual reality IS being used in hundreds of practical applications. Surgeons use computer simulation with pressure feedback to practice surgery before they practice on real patients. Same goes for pilots. And military training! In the future, soldiers will wear special gear that can monitor vitals as seen in FPS. VR provides invaluable training for the military. A million gallons of blood in VR is better than one drop in real life. VR is valuable and the market is out there for practical applications as well as creative. C'mon guys. Think of the virtual reality games as football for geeks.

I thought the Jade Blue Afterglow(the game character)/Pheobe relationship kind of poked fun at the Scully/ Female X-Phile relationship. It was neat, though. JBA was everything that Pheobe thought she couldn't be: beautiful, powerful, sexy, intimidating. I know at least one other person here who has probably looked at her Scully picture and yelled "Don't think! Just pick up the phone and make it happen!" In the end, though, Jade turned into her own goddess. Does that mean I'll turn into Scully?

Sexual Undertones in FPS: I know I said above that technology was being used more and more in practical applications, but I'm going to go ahead and contradict myself. Techies are creating "sex suits," specialized body suits that don't simulate, but stimulate. The suits have vibrators in... appropriate places, and another person is supposed to be able to control the signals that are sent to the suits. In the article I read (from TIME, mind you) the company working to create the suits said that it would be a better option than phone sex for couples that were temporarily separated physically. Whatever. Maybe Mulder's on the cutting edge of this technology. TLG and Pheobe looked pretty surprised to hear Mulder tossing off terms like "wire frame" and "text wrap."

I agree with everyone that the cops scene was stupid and that they probably deal with tons of prostitutes. That was a wasted scene (not including the part with M&S and JBA- that was fun) and so was the scene with Ivan and Pheobe arguing over whether or not to give TLG the kill code. It was supposed to build suspense or something, but I just found it irritating. One scene I did really like was the one where Scully, Pheobe and TLG are looking at the computer showing that Mulder (player 4) is still in the game. "There he is!" "Where?" There!" "Where?!" hee hee.

Scully did come in and kick ass for Mulder, but Mulder did get the door open. One question: If Scully and Mulder did get shot by JBA, how come they only got green-gooed? I liked that Scully got into the game when she didn't seem to be any use in the computer room, but Mulder and Scully could have spent more time in the game. "Scully, come on, you need to help me get psycho points to get more ammo!" And Mulder was definitely being sarcastic with his "It's Darrel Musashi!" comment.

Not bad, but not one of my favorites this season.
