Subject: "Humbug" and "The Calusari"

While in some ways it's difficult to imagine two more different eps than these -- "Humbug" being the first real "lite" XF ep and "The Calusari" being a darkly classic XF case -- both, oddly enough, deal with the theme of twin brothers who are linked in a disturbing manner.
"Humbug" is hilariously funny, especially in the "Mulder and Scully exhume a potato" scene. I also love when they're chasing the suspect through the fun house and end up chasing each other. It's nice, too, that Scully is the one forced to come up with -- and face scepticism from the local law enforcement officers for -- the bizarre hypothesis that the conjoined twins can sometimes disjoin, allowing one of them to committ murder.
"The Calusari" was very scary, but you have to kind of wonder about the mother in this ep. I think if I'd had two of my three children and my husband die -- one child and the husband in bizarre "accidents" within a few months of each other -- I would have done *anything* to keep my remaining child alive. . .including allowing my immigrant mother to perform superstitious rites on him or allowing him to be removed from my custody by social workers and placed in a safer environment. This was a solid ep, though, with Mulder and Scully in their classic roles: Mulder kept wanting to blame demons for the deaths in the family, while Scully suggested the more mundane (by XF standards) possibility of Munchasen's Syndrome by Proxy.
